GreenMatrix is an independent data resource for US precision agriculture. We help farmers, agronomists, and agribusiness professionals make better decisions by turning public agricultural data into clear, actionable information — with no vendor bias and no sponsored content.
What we're building
GreenMatrix is built around three live, cross-linked datasets for the US precision agriculture market — with more planned as we find authoritative public sources worth adding.
Crop Yield Data — state-level yield data for corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and sorghum across 33 states, sourced directly from USDA NASS. Each page includes 6-year yield trends, comparison to the national average, and plain-English analysis of what the numbers mean for farm margins at current commodity prices. Pages update automatically whenever USDA releases new figures, after a human reviews and approves the change.
Crop Prices — state-level monthly and marketing-year-average (MYA) prices for corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and sorghum, also from USDA NASS's Agricultural Prices report. Each page shows how a state's price compares to the national average, tracks 24-month price trends, and includes a revenue calculator using the same MYA figure USDA itself uses for crop insurance guarantees. Coverage follows wherever NASS maintains an active state-level price survey, so it doesn't always match yield coverage crop-for-crop.
Grants and Funding Guides — state-by-state guides to USDA conservation programs, primarily EQIP, which reimburses 50–90% of the cost of implementing precision agriculture practices such as variable-rate seeding, nutrient management, and irrigation upgrades. We cover eligibility, state signup windows, typical cost-share rates, and local NRCS Service Center contacts, rebuilt each fiscal year from published NRCS payment schedules.
The three datasets are cross-linked by design: yield pages show where your state stands against the national average, price pages show what closing that gap is actually worth in dollars, and grant pages show what USDA will reimburse to close it. Each cluster also includes a free calculator built on published USDA benchmarks — clearly labeled as an estimate, not a quote.
Data sources and methodology
All crop yield and price figures come from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), accessed through the USDA Quick Stats API. Yield data represents the final annual state-level estimate published by NASS following harvest completion, with in-season forecasts updated as USDA releases them throughout the growing year. Price data comes from NASS's monthly Agricultural Prices report; the marketing-year-average is the volume-weighted figure USDA uses for crop insurance revenue guarantees. US average figures for both are the national weighted average from the same NASS reports.
Grant data is sourced from published USDA NRCS FY payment schedules and state signup windows. We don't estimate, model, or adjust any of the underlying figures — always verify current signup windows and county-level variation with your local NRCS Service Center before applying.
Each page shows its data source and last-updated date. If you notice a discrepancy between a figure on this site and the USDA source, contact us and we will verify and correct it within 48 hours.
Independence and transparency
We don't sell software, equipment, or consulting services, and we have no vendor relationships of any kind. GreenMatrix is funded through display advertising, clearly labeled and kept separate from editorial content.
